Progress in Iyengar Yoga is not linear. Many long time Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) frequently advocate for Iyengar Yoga students to not focus exclusively on improving one’s yoga pose. By practicing Iyengar Yoga daily we can become more in tune to purifying our yogic consciousness as opposed to making our yoga postures better. Backsliding is an inevitable obstacle to the goals of yoga. Lord Patanjali offers a way to overcome yogic obstacles in Sutra 1.35, “by contemplating an object that helps to maintain steadiness of mind and consciousness.” (B.K.S. Iyengar translation from Light on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali) Objects can be yoga asanas.
