Students learn yoga poses in a systematic way. The family of yoga postures taught first are the standing yoga poses. The feet are taught to be close together first like in Tadasana, Mountain Pose, as this is similar to how people stand normally. After introducing narrow standing yoga poses the wide standing poses are taught. The feet are placed about four feet apart. In yoga class people learn how to stand on their feet with the trunk vertically upright. Once the sides of the trunk are felt and elongated students go on to do the lateral standing poses such as Utthita Trikonasana, Extended Triangle Pose.
