As David Bowie sang in his song “Changes…turn and face the strange” we yogis and yoginis face the the unknown. Sometimes yoga can seem peculiar and bewildering to beginners but in yoga we aim to shed light on dark places. As beings in the natural world we are constantly subjected to change. Sometimes change can be helpful when facing a difficult situation when we remind ourselves, “this too shall pass.” One of the major themes of yoga philosophy according to Lord Patanjali is that nature is ever-changing while the infinite being within is pure and unchanging. Yoga practice brings us closer to the soul known as the purusa in sanskrit. In turn we become less identified with nature known as prakrti.
