In honor of Mother’s Day let us recognize what B.K.S. Iyengar deemed the mother of all poses Salamba Sarvangasana. Translated into english as fully supported all limbs pose. Many Iyengar Yoga practioners casually refer to this posture as shoulder stand. In Light on Yoga under the effects section for this pose he writes, “As a mother strives for harmony and happiness in the home, so this asana strives for the harmony and happiness of the human system.” Props are used in this pose especially blankets under the shoulders 3 to 5 inches in height. This support gives more lift in the back and chest. A belt is commonly used around the upper arms for more secure reinforcement in this inversion. There are different approaches to learning Salamba Sarvangasana. Having a working relationship with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) and attending class regularly with them can help you successfully learn shoulder stand in a way conducive to your body’s needs.
